To Lube or Not to Lube – That is the Question

Depending on your likes and dislikes in the bedroom, there’s a lubricant for everyone. As with everything, some are better than others when it comes to using your favourite sex toy or condom. Lubes can even enhance your experience by adding more longevity and foreplay fun.

Water-based lube

The most popular lube is the water-based option. Water-based lube is usually less of a skin irritant when compared to its silicone-based counterpart. And you’ll be pleased to know that water-based lube can be used with silicone sex toys and condoms.

Most water-based lubes are hypoallergenic and vegan friendly, and even better, they’re usually non-staining.

As the name suggests, water-based lubricants are water-soluble, which means they will dissolve in water, so not great for shower activities.

They’re however slippery like silicone-based lubes, but generally more lightweight in comparison.

Water-based lubricants are generally considered to be safe when used as directed, as they contain various water-soluble ingredients.

However, before trying any lubricant, you should always review the full list of ingredients and patch test the product to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction before applying it to your most delicate parts.

A water-based lubricant could be a better option if you:

  • intend to use silicone toys
  • prefer little to no cleanup afterwards
  • don’t plan to use it in the bath or shower
  • don’t want to stain your sheets or bedding
  • prefer a lightweight lubricant over a thicker product

Silicone-based lube

If shower sex is your thing then a silicone-based lube is what you need, these lubricants tend to last longer and won’t rinse off as easily in the shower. The silicone-based lubricant is also safe to use with condoms and is a favourite for anal sex.

But be warned, do NOT use silicone-based lubes with silicone sex toys! Silicone-based lubes will break down the surface of silicone sex toys. This surface breakdown not only destroys the sex toy but also allows bacteria to grow.

Silicone-based lubricants are generally considered safe because they aren’t absorbed into the body.

However, as mentioned above, before trying any lubricant, you should always review the full list of ingredients and patch test the product to make sure you don’t have an allergic reaction before applying it to your most delicate parts.

A silicone-based lubricant might be right for you if you:

  • intend to have anal sex
  • want something long-lasting and slick
  • prefer a thicker consistency
  • don’t mind possibly staining your clothing or sheets
  • need a waterproof lubricant that performs well in the bath or shower

How to apply lube

The most important thing to know about lube is you can never use too much. The deciding factor should be what works best for you and your partner/s.

Apply the lube where needed and if you’re using condoms or sex toys, be sure to apply a non-oil-based lubricant. Rememeber NOT to use silcone-based lubricants with silicone toys.

The main goal of any lubricant is to help reduce friction. This can make your sexual experiences far more pleasurable.

Remember to always read the product description, list of ingredients and any supplied information before use and do a patch test.
